My first experience of a Formula 1 car

Jazeman Jaafar lights up the streets of Kuala Lumpur in a MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS F1 car

Jazeman Jaafar climbed behind the steering wheel of a Formula One car for the first time on Sunday and gave a crowd-pleasing performance at the PETRONAS MOTORSPORTS demo run staged on the streets of Kuala Lumpur.

The 20-year-old Malaysian was given the privilege of driving a MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS F1 car at this event, making his debut in an F1 car, an occasion which Jazeman had been dreaming about since a young age. A hectic testing schedule and limited time available meant that Jazeman had not been able to drive the car prior to the event so when he put his foot on the accelerator to start his run, it was in front of thousands of fans lining the streets in the shadow of the iconic PETRONAS towers.

Jazeman said of the experience, “Wow! What an amazing day! It’s difficult to put into words just how much I enjoyed driving the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS F1 car, it was just awesome. There’s nothing quite like it. It was made all the more special to be driving in my home country, in front of the Malaysian fans and my family. I would like to thank PETRONAS for giving me this opportunity; I’m very grateful to them for entrusting me with the car for the demo run. “I loved every minute of the demo run”, he continues. “ Although the confines of the demonstration area didn’t allow me to get up to racing speed, I was still able to sample the sheer power, responsiveness and amazing braking of the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS F1 car. With the green light to smoke the tyres, rev the engine and perform a few doughnuts I think the crowd were given a spectacle to remember and I won’t forget their reaction with the huge applause I received. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did, and I would like to thank them for coming along and being part of a great event.” Jazeman certainly gave the fans a treat with his burn outs, doughnuts and waving to the crowds lining the streets as he powered the F1 car round five laps of the temporary track created especially for the demo run. He gave some lucky fans a very special memento of the occasion when he threw a pair of racing gloves into the crowd. “Being part of this demo run has been the highlight of my year,” concluded Jazeman. “I’ve always believed that I’d drive an F1 car and today I achieved it; it certainly lived up to my expectations and has given me a taster of its capabilities. It’s whetted my appetite for more and now I’m hoping that I’ll be driving it on a circuit in the coming years.  Before that time can come I need to continue with my racing education, gaining more experience behind the wheel and focus on my own racing programme, as I move up to Formula Renault 3.5, a series  which is another step nearer my F1 goal.” Jazeman’s busy racing schedule forced him to return to Europe after the demo run for testing prior to the start of his race season and he will rejoin the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS F1 team at the 2013 Formula 1 PETRONAS Malaysia Grand Prix. Jazeman will cheer on drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, as well as having a unique insight into the inner workings of the team with privileged access to engineering meetings, furthering Jazeman’s racing education and experience.
